Black-owned restaurants in Canada are taking centre stage this week as ByBlacks Restaurant Week (BRW) officially kicks off.

The week-long event will showcase African, Caribbean and fusion cuisines from more than 40 restaurants across the GTA and elsewhere in Canada.

Underway from Nov. 14 to 20, 2022, diners can enjoy a special prix-fixe menu in-person or order takeout or delivery — similar to Toronto’s Summerlicious.

It is the fourth edition of BRW, which started in May 2021. The event is usually held bi-annually in May and November.

“In Spring 2021, we had ten participating restaurants, and now it’s grown to 47 restaurants in four provinces,” ByBlacks publisher and co-founder Roger Dundas told blogTO in an interview.

Check out some of the participating restaurants below:

SugarKane Restaurant

SugarKane Restaurant has been a Caribbean-food staple in Toronto's Danforth neighbourhood and recently appeared on CBC's "Family Feud Canada" and Cityline with Tracy Moore on Citytv. Dinner: $30+ each.

Boukan

Boukan has lined up an impressive prix-fixe menu offering Haitian street food and other fusion cuisines. Be sure to try the mango phyllo bites, its Haitian fritay (fried foods) or the Jamaican rum cheesecake bites. Dinner: $30+ each.

The Abibiman Project

Started in 2020, the Abibiman Project serves savoury and sweet foods inspired by Africa and young founder Rachel Adjei's Ghanaian heritage. The menu features entree options of hibiscus prawns, poulet Muamba or a mushroom veggie dish with coconut rice and spiced cabbage. Dinner: $35+ each.

Scotthill Caribbean Cuisine

It has an upscale atmosphere; on some nights, Scotthill Caribbean Cuisine also has live music. From soups to jerk chicken meals, the restaurant will also serve veggie channa options for vegans and a slice of rum cake or ice cream for dessert. Dinner: $30+ each.

Also Consider: Cuisine By Noel

If you're looking for a private catered experience for you and your partner or family, Cuisine By Noel is a Caribbean chef that offers a creative range of foods. You can also order food from his establishment on Doordash. Dinner: Prices vary.
