Aisha Bowe, one of a handful of Black woman to travel to space and aerospace engineer famous for travelling with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has secured a nearly $1 billion contract with the U.S. government.

The former rocket scientist, founder, and CEO of STEMBoard, a company that helps governments and private-sector companies with technology integration, was awarded $947 million to Exacta Solutions, a joint venture with STEMBoards.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) announced the joint venture on May 25.

According to 21Ninety.com, the grant will “provide support to NGA’s total lifecycle acquisition management, strategic financial management and strategic business management activities.”

Bowe is a celebrated philanthropist who regularly supports organizations and causes focused on STEM programs. The documentary “In Her Element” also explored her story. Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company released the documentary.

Bowe worked as an aerospace engineer at the Ames Research Centre while NASA employed her. She concentrated on optimizing aeroplane trajectories and miniature satellites there.

Along with founding STEMBoard, Bowe also created LINGO, a coding kit that enables at-home instruction for children.
