In a groundbreaking move for Canada's film and production industry, Amazon MGM Studios has recently inked a significant deal with Pinewood Toronto Studios.

The contract includes exclusive access to new production facilities in downtown Toronto for future projects, demonstrating Amazon MGM's commitment to expanding its production footprint in Canada. The deal also includes the exclusive use of five cutting-edge sound stages, workshops, and office spaces, totalling 160,000 square feet.

"Pinewood Group is an industry leader, and with the Toronto region's best-in-class crews, this agreement offers us immense opportunity for the continued expansion of film and series projects in Toronto, Ontario, and Canada. We are thrilled our productions will continue to have a home in Toronto for many years to come," said Dan Scharf, vice president of global business operations at Amazon MGM Studios.

For Black creators in Canada, this collaboration opens up new avenues for involvement in the film industry. The expansion of Amazon MGM Studios' production footprint in the country aligns with its strategy of producing and commissioning series and films shot across various provinces, including Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Quebec. Stakeholders say the studio could present a unique opportunity for diverse talents to contribute to and thrive in an industry witnessing unprecedented growth and recognition.

The agreement marks Amazon MGM Studios' first multi-year commitment to Canadian studio space. It has been celebrated with a ribbon-cutting event attended by dignitaries such as the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.

"This landmark agreement further strengthens our relationship with Amazon MGM Studios and demonstrates our joint commitment to the City of Toronto," said Paul Golding, chairman of Pinewood Group. "We are very much looking forward to working together and welcoming many incredible productions to the Pinewood Toronto Studio lot."

"This investment is going to provide a big boost to our cultural sectors and help to ensure Ontario remains one of the world's leading jurisdictions for film and television production for years to come," Premier Doug Ford said.

Neil Lumsden, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, echoed this sentiment and was also on hand. Vic Gupta, CEO of CreateTO and Councillor Paula Fletcher, chair of Toronto's Film, Television, and Digital Media Advisory Board, were on site, too.
