Melissa Butler, founder and CEO of The Lip Bar, who 11 years ago made an appearance on ABC’s “Shark Tank,” has announced the brand has become the largest Black-owned makeup company at Target, according to AfroTech.

“(The Lip Bar and Thread Beauty) are taking up six shelves of space in select stores,” the founder said in an Instagram post. “I saw it for the first time on Wednesday and I cried my eyes out. I am so proud of where my team and I have taken the business and the beauty industry.

“Y’all may not know how MAJOR this is. We are the first Black-owned makeup company to take up this much space. I love making Black History during Black History Month,” she added.

Building the business online with one SKU, Butler, who is from Detroit, and her business partner appeared on “Shark Tank” in 2015 and got a no from the sharks.

But she didn’t let that stop her. Ten years later, the vegan beauty brand has sold more than two million units, according to AfroTech.

She also made sure the sharks didn't forget. In February 2022, she took out billboards in Detroit, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago and Washington D.C. that read, “10 years and 2 million units sold. Thanks, Mr. Wonderful.”

During an interview with the Breakfast Club, shark Kevin O’Leary said, “I’m proud of them for taking the heat. I’m proud that they’re entrepreneurs and are successful. It’s a wonderful thing to see that happen. They were facing an almost impossible task because going into the cosmetics industry is so difficult to get market share. But they pulled it off, so you gotta applaud them — there’s no question about it. But that is a tough space because the margins are so high that the competition is just brutal.”
